Eddie Jones signs deal to stay with England Rugby until 2021

England’s Head Coach, Eddie Jones, has signed a two year contract extension to stay in the position until 2021. Many thought Jones, who has led England to a staggering 22 test wins out of 23, would be stepping down after Rugby World Cup 2019, however this now means Jones is likely to work with his successor to lead England into Rugby World Cup 2023 in France. This robust planning process is in place to avoid previous disruptive patterns when handing over to a new coaching team.

When asked about the extension of this deal Jones said staying on was “not a difficult decision”. Jones went on to reiterate just how focused he is to “develop a team capable of being the number one rugby team in the world and winning the World Cup in 2019”.

This deal does include a break clause based on England’s performance in Japan, however the RFU have not provided details of what success at Rugby World Cup 2019 would look like. So far England’s chances are looking good having risen from eighth to second in the world ranking under Jones’ leadership. With a 95% win rate it is apparent the man who led Japan to their famous victory over South Africa at Rugby World Cup 2015 won’t be satisfied with anything other than winning the famous Webb Ellis Cup.

All eyes will be on England who head into the NatWest 6 Nations in Rome on February 4 with a number of key players out due to injury, including no 8s Billy Vunipola and Nathan Hughes plus props Ellis Genge and Matt Mullan. Joe Marler will also miss the fixtures against Italy and Wales due to suspension as will James Haskell, who is on a four week ban following a dangerous tackle against Jamie Roberts whilst playing his club rugby.

England will take on Wales at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 10 February in their first home game of the year for what is set to be an epic battle. Take a look at our range of rugby corporate hospitality packages available to enjoy this fixture in style, with premium food and drink, guest speakers from the world of rugby and a sought after official match ticket.
