England and Wales, a rivalry through the years
Two countries; neighbours in geography, rivals on the pitch. England and Wales, both steeped in culture and history, are joined in unison in so many ways until the NatWest 6 Nations comes around and pride, grit and determination take to the field.
Saturday 10th February 2018 will mark the 131st time that England and Wales will face each other on the rugby pitch, as they go head-to-head in the NatWest 6 Nations 2018. Twickenham Stadium will play host to this exciting match, which looks set to be as thrilling as the history between the two teams.
The first meeting for these two rivals was at Richardson’s Fields in London on 19th February 1881, where England claimed the victory. Since then England have remained on top, winning 61 of the 130 matches so far and gaining 1,751 points across all matches. The competition is tight though, with Wales sitting close behind with 57 wins and 1,544 points in the bag. 12 matches have resulted in draws.
An interesting fact about this rivalry is that the largest point difference in an England v Wales game is a notably impressive 57. The match on the 4thAugust 2007 at Twickenham saw England triumph in a Rugby World Cup 2007 warm up match with a remarkable 62-5 victory over their Welsh opponents. England will be looking to do the same this year, as both teams continue their preparations for Rugby World Cup 2019, which is being held in Japan for the first time ever next year.
Since the Six Nations began in 2000, England and Wales have met 18 times, with England claiming victory 12 times over Wales’ six wins. Most recently, in 2017 England stole the win again on the way to another Six Nations title with a 21-16 score line at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
