STH Live Business Breakfast Series – Event – June – 2017

What in life can we be certain of? Uncertainty.

Keynote speaker Caspar Berry took guests through his thoughts on this complex but necessary subject based on his experience in the world of entertainment, sport and business at the second STH Live Business Breakfast event.

Attendees were asked to consider why and how they could use uncertainty to create competitive edge in the work place and the merits of accepting the fear of uncertainty in order to have a greater chance of getting it right, based on Caspar’s experience as a professional poker player and looking at a selection of research across different industries.

Whilst certainty, process and procedure might make us feel safe and seek to eliminate risk by control, can we learn from others who have been prepared to take a risk and at times be wrong? For Caspar, statistics show that short term losses and risks can be outweighed by long term achievements and wins. Is the greatest risk therefore not being able to react to change?

For Babe Ruth, seen by some as the greatest baseball player of all time, the reward was worth the risk. When Ruth retired after 22 seasons he held the all-time record for the most home runs and strike outs simultaneously. Is it not a coincidence he can be seen as a “best” and the “worst”? In business is ROI not the metric that matters?

Following the keynote discussion, Caspar was joined on stage by 3 x Olympic medallist Kelly Sotherton and World, European and Commonwealth 400m Hurdles Champion Dai Greene, who both provided first-hand accounts on risks they have taken in their professional careers, how they approach uncertainty and whether they have  created opportunity in these situations competing on the world stage.
