The countdown is on to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Tuesday 24th July 2018 marks the two years to go milestone for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and preparations are well underway. In July 2020, Team GB will head to Japan for what promises to be one of the most innovative and exciting Olympic Games yet.

Following on from their record haul of 67 medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Team GB aim to go even further and make history in Tokyo. The best athletes in their fields from across the world will gather for one of the biggest sporting events in history, with five new sports introduced into the Games – baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

Over the years, Team GB has gone from strength to strength with athletes winning more medals and surpassing all expectations. At the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games Team GB came 36th in the medal table with 15 medals, and just 20 years later at Rio 2016 the team finished in an incredible 2nd place with 67 medals. Most recently, Team GB have returned from PyeongChang 2018 making history with their greatest ever results at an Olympic Winter Games, with skeleton gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold becoming the first ever British athlete to successfully defend their title at a Winter Games.

A new generation of athletes are set to make their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, as well as Rio medallists and “ones to watch” Adam Peaty and Dina Asher-Smith, who are aiming to build on their impressive form on the world stage over the last few years.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will see Team GB set their sights on bringing home more medals than ever before and maintaining their high position in the medal table. With the sheer passion and determination of the British team and the unique sights, sounds and atmosphere of Tokyo as one of the world’s greatest cities, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be a global sporting event that will be memorable in so many ways.

The countdown is on as we begin our journey to the Olympic Games. That incomparable moment when crowds of British fans gather together, waving Team GB flags to cheer on their Olympic heroes as they go for gold in a city that must be seen to be believed, makes the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games a true ‘bucket list’ item for many sporting fans.
